Lyth ton keeps Champions in command

Adam Lyth’s magnificent century helped Yorkshire to a commanding position on day two of the Champion County match against the MCC.

Having brought up his half century at the end of Day One, Lyth resumed on 53*, hitting 12 fours on his way to a brilliant 113, as Yorkshire posted a formidable 372, to lead by 151, before the MCC ended proceedings on 13/0.

Young Yorkshire prospect Will Rhodes continued to impress on his first-class debut, building on his brilliant figures of 2-10 yesterday with a measured 61 in a partnership of 104 with wicket-keeper Andrew Hodd (57) who also made a fine half-century.

Resuming their innings on 82-2, Lyth and Steve Patterson made a workmanlike start to the day putting on 91 in a little under 30 overs, with Lyth bringing up his ton before Patterson was bowled by Adam Riley for 36.

Lyth was joined at the crease by Jonny Bairstow, but he didn’t last long, pinned in front by Chris Rushworth without troubling the scorers as Yorkshire entered the pavilion at Lunch on 181-4.

Lyth pushed on but was trapped LBW by Riley to bring a wonderful innings to an end on 113. Rhodes and Hodd took Yorkshire past the honours even stage and beyond, with the latter the first to bring his 50 up from 58 balls before Rhodes followed with a much more leisurely 130-ball half-ton.

With one eye on the tea break, Hodd’s concentration lapsed and he was out for 57 knicking off to Matt Dunn (2-89).  Rhodes and Adil Rashid brought the 300 up just before Tea with Yorkshire leading by 82 runs.

The pair managed to put on 17 after the break before Rhodes was caught at first slip by Alastair Cook to give Rushworth his second wicket.

Tim Bresnan joined Rashid, but didn’t spend long at the crease before being caught at leg gully by Cook again this time off the bowling of Riley for 12.

Rashid was not in the mood to stick around though, striking 42 from 57 before being trapped in front by Michael Carberry with the part-time bowler’s second delivery with Yorkshire on 369-9.

Last man Jack Brooks played a shot straight out of the tailender’s handbook, holing out at long-off to James Hildreth to the bowling of Dunn to leave Yorkshire all out for 372 with a handy lead of 151 and a nervy five-over spell for the MCC to negotiate at the end of the day’s play.

Cook and Nick Compton came out with the task of surviving the last overs of the evening, and they did just that reaching 13-0 at the close, still 138 runs shy of making Yorkshire bat again.
