Rain curtails first day at Cardiff

Stumps Day One: Derbyshire 47/2 (Slater 25*) v Glamorgan, at Cardiff

It was a frustratingly truncated day in Cardiff as overnight rain and morning showers had seeped under the covers, to render play in the morning session entirely impossible.

When the players did finally make their way onto the field at 2:40 in the afternoon, it was only to be for a smidge over 15 overs, as the rain soon returned to wash out what remained of the day.

In truth, this was one of those days that was so dark and bleak, it made very idea of cricket unappealing to players and spectators alike.

The bright spot for the day, came not during the hour of possible play, but at the toss, as Michael Hogan was named in the Glamorgan XI for the first time this season. The Western Australian has led the Welsh side’s attack impeccably for the past two seasons, and without him in the first two matches this season, their attack has looked more than a trifle toothless.

But it was Graeme Wagg who made the first blow, dismissing Chesney Hughes for just 9 after he lazily drove a full delivery gently to Craig Meschede in the covers. Aside from the wicket, Wagg was decidedly wayward during his spell and Ben Slater cashed in by dispatching some of the looser deliveries. Slater lost his partner however, as skipper Wayne Madsen was trapped LBW by the bustling Andy Carter for only a single.

Scott Elstone and Slater then played out until the rain, to leave their side at 47/2 after 15.1 overs.
