Essex secure Aussie fast bowler Dixon

Essex County Cricket Club have today announced the signing of Australian fast bowler Matt Dixon on a two-year deal.

Twenty-three-year-old Dixon hails from Western Australia and his career thus far includes playing for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield as well as Australia’s under 17s and under 19s.

In the Scorchers’ final match of BBL05, the right arm quick was responsible for taking the wickets of both Luke Wright and Kevin Pietersen as he took a career best 3-32.

Essex will see his signing as an addition to an early strong bowling line up, that already includes the likes of Adam Milne and Ashar Zaidi. To date, he has taken only seven wickets in five first-class games, but averages 22.00 with the ball from four Twenty20 matches.

Head Coach Chris Silverwood said of the signing: “Matt is a talented young man who bowls at a really good pace. He adds depth to our squad, as you need a number of seamers in a squad to be able to compete on all three fronts, as we plan to.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming him into the squad.”

Dixon holds a British passport, so will not count as an overseas player, and will be available for all three formats of the game, subject to ECB approval.
