James Taylor forced to retire from cricket

England batsman James Taylor was forced to retire from Test cricket following the diagnosis of a heart condition.

Taylor played in England’s last Test series in South Africa, and was due to open his county campaign in a university game against Cambridge MCCU.

But the 26-year-old was ruled out with a suspected virus, but specialist scans revealed him having heart condition ARVC (Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Arrhythmia).

Taylor played seven Tests for England, top-scoring with 76 against Pakistan in the UAE in an innings where no other batsman passed 50.

That came after a three-year absence from the Test arena, with the diminutive batsman averaging an impressive 46 in first-class cricket, with many more Tests expected of him.

England Team Director Andrew Strauss said: “It is both shocking and saddening to hear that James’ career has been cut short in such a sudden and unexpected manner.

“Throughout his career, he has constantly impressed with his determination to make the absolute most of his ability, and it is immensely cruel that such a hard working player will be unable to fulfil his great potential in the international arena.

“The ECB will work closely with Nottinghamshire and together we will do everything possible to help James through this difficult period, and aid him in his recovery.”
