SSCC Division One Round up: Monday 25th April

A frustrating day around the Division One grounds on day two, as weather stemmed any flow that ever got going.  Plenty of action to report in the times that play was able to take place however with wickets, runs, career-bests and records coming thick and fast. Emma Carter has the updates.

Durham vs Middlesex at Emirates Riverside

Middlesex 389 all out (Malan 74, Gubbins 60; Stokes 4-80) lead Durham 295-4 (Stoneman 139*, Burnham 60) by 94 runs

Despite the distinct possibility that a storm so aggressive that a sequel to Noah’s Ark might be on the cards could strike at any minute, and having to overcome snow and frost first thing this morning, Durham put on quite the performance against their London visitors. England International Ben Stokes took the ball early this morning and cleaned up the tail removing Paul Stirling first for 44 and then Steven Finn for just 5.

With a Middlesex total of 389, 11 runs shy of that fourth and final batting point, Durham’s openers came out to the crease with some serious gumption.  Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings smashed 62-0 from the first ten overs of the match including finding the boundary along the ground 10 times between them. It was just 10 minutes before the lunch break that Finn got Jennings caught behind by John Simpson and this prompted a mini-collapse as James Harris removed his replacement, Scott Borthwick, in the same fashion for five before the break for luncheon. All of a sudden the aggressive hosts had tripped from 71-0 to 82-2.

For the afternoon session Stoneman was joined by Joe Burnham, and it seems the confidence of the elder rubbed off on the younger as he struck 61 to move past 50 for the first time in First Class cricket and added 131 runs with the Durham veteran. He become Finn’s second victim this time trapped lbw.

Stoneman was in no mood to miss-out on a score either and made sure Harris rued the moment he dropped an edge when his score tally read just 19 and played on through the day to finish unbeaten on 139.

The pacey Finn got vengeance on his England teammate Stokes who removed the Middlesex man’s stumps earlier in the day by removing him for just nine.

Surrey vs Somerset at the Kia Oval

Surrey 463 all out (Sangakkara 171, Burns 89, Roy 85; Groenewald 5-94) lead Somerset 99-1 (Trescothick 68*) by 364 runs

Like the rest of the country, London was plagued by the weather and the players spent more time walking on and off the field than doing anything else.

The home side resumed on 394-5 but before the first hour was up Ben Foakes and Tom Curran had both fallen, and Gareth Batty had joined overnight batter Zafar Ansari at the crease. Starting on 28* Ansari was looking like he might be losing partners at the other end but sympathy from punters started to thin when two of his partners were run-out through mix-ups. All of a sudden Surrey were 444-8.

A ten minute break off the field for bad light just after Ansari had clocked up his half century seemed to cause a lapse in his concentration as well and he fell almost immediately after the resumption for 53 off the bowling of Tim Groenewald. New boy Mark Footitt headed to the crease but made just five before he fell too to leave the hosts all out before lunch on 463.

Somerset’s Groenewald was the man to do the damage through the morning session as he finished the innings with figures of 5-94, three of which fell in this morning session.

It was then the turn of previous captain Marcus Trescothick to lead the way as he and fellow opener Tom Abell negotiated a tricky two overs before lunch. The Somerset man needed just 12 runs to become the county’s second leading run-scorer of all time – he made mincemeat of the required runs and continued with a prowess archaic of his time with the International team to end the day on 68*.

In two sessions heavily affected by rain and light, the only wicket to fall was Abell on 19 off the bowling of Footitt and caught by Arun Harinath.

Warwickshire vs Yorkshire at Edgbaston

Yorkshire 368-9 (Ballance 68, Patterson 62*; Woakes 3-79) lead Warwickshire

A later start, reduced overs and frustrating resistance from the Yorkshire batsmen have left just two days left in this game and not even one innings completed.

Gary Ballance and Jack Leaning resumed on 50 apiece when play began at 13:30, but failed to add too many to their respective totals. Leaning fell for 51 to Chris Woakes who had him caught behind and then Keith Barker removed Ballance in the same way for 68.

Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett both offered up invaluable contributions of 63 and 26 respectively before Steve Patterson secured himself a career-best 62*.

Barker and Woakes finished the day with three wickets each, the former for the cost of 99 and the latter for 79.

32 more runs are needed for the visitors to secure full batting points while Warwickshire have secured their maximum bowling points already. They’ll also be hoping to remove the final wicket cheaply in the morning and have their fair chance at a first innings too.
