ECB announce new ‘North vs South’ One Day competition

A new one-day series has been announced by the ECB today which will pit players from the northern English counties against their southern counterparts.

The series, which will be played for the first time in Abu Dhabi next March, will use a computer programme to select the five players, including a spinner, for each team. Said programme will use the ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) rankings recorded over this summer’s Royal London One Day Cup series.

The initial agreement for the series, which will consist of three 50 over matches, is for three years starting in March 2017 and will be played in the UAE each year. It will serve as a warm-up series for the Royal London One Day Cup that is played on the English County Cricket circuit.

The MVP rankings are different for batsmen and bowlers. Batsmen receive points for average, percentage of the team’s score and their run rate will bowlers earn more points for wickets that come from top-order batsmen.

Since this is such a new story, we’ll do our best to keep you posted with anything else that emerges!
