SSCC Division One Round-up

Three of our reports – Emma Carter, Scott Hunt and Terry Wright – whizz you around day four of this week’s Division One County Championship fixtures.

Stumps day four: Hampshire 336 (Carberry 107, Dawson 89; Murtagh 3-64, Roland-Jones 3-87) & 290-5d (Adams 70, Wheater 57*; Murtagh 2-39) draw with Middlesex 361 (Malan 121; Tomlinson 4-74) & 55-2 (Malan 24*) at The Ageas Bowl

Despite glimmers of hope being provided by Steven Finn when he removed two wickets in two overs, Hampshire batted for most of the day to ensure a draw was on the cards.

Hampshire captain James Vince fell early this morning to a Toby Roland-Jones delivery and then Finn removed opener Jimmy Adams for 70 and Liam Dawson in consecutive overs just after lunch to give just a hint of possibility to the visitors to Adam Wheater and Ryan McLaren put on an unbeaten 104 partnership to secure the draw.

The pair finished on 57* and 46* respectively when Vince called his boys in with the scoreboard reading 290-5; a lead of 265. Middlesex therefore needed 266 from 31 overs to secure a win – when Sam Robson fell for zero and Nick Gubbins for just five, it became abundantly clear all too quickly that the total was even more unattainable than previously thought.

Nick Compton and Dawid Malan saw through the remaining overs with no real issues finishing 14* and 24* when handshakes were had and the match was concluded as a draw.

Middlesex walk away with 12 points and Hampshire with 11.

Stumps day four: Surrey 457 (Harinath 96, Davies 87; Stokes 4-117) & 244-6 (T Curran 54; Stokes 3-57) draw with Durham 607-7 (Burnham 135, Collingwood 106*, Borthwick 77; Curran 2-105) at The Kia Oval

In a match that was almost exclusively heading for a draw, Durham lads Jack Burnham and Paul Collingwood scored their first and 23nd First Class centuries respectively.

The former is twenty years the junior to the latter (almost) but proved his class in the precise same manner as centuries came to both men in a match that seemed destined to be a draw from day two.

Benign bowling conditions could be given the credit for the visitors prolific run-scoring but when Durham finally declared their first innings on 607-7 – a lead of 150 – the hosts suddenly found themselves 65-3 all thanks to that England man Ben Stokes. The wickets feel in 16 balls for just 12 runs and all of the sudden Surrey were folding.

It was youngsters to the rescue however as Ben Foakes 36* and Tom Curran 54 dug their heels in and refused to become Stokes’ next victims. Their partnership helped to secure the home side the draw in a match that had they kept crumbling, could have slipped from their grasp all too easily.

A wicket a-piece for Ryan Pringle, Chris Rushworth and Brydon Carse left the hosts six wickets down for 244 runs at the close of play and the draw signed, sealed and delivered.

Surrey secured 11 points and while Durham took 12.

Stumps day four Nottinghamshire 261 (Mullaney 78; Brooks 4-74) & 348 (Read 101; Patterson 4-57) draw with Yorkshire 290 (Lees 92; Ball 4-57) & 257-9 (Lees 107; Gurney 4-53) at Trent Bridge

At Trent Bridge, a match that had seemed dead at tea on the final day came to life in the last session.

First Yorkshire made a bold if belated bid to score the 320 they needed to win off just 53 overs; and then, when wickets started to tumble to Harry Gurney, last man Jack Brooks had to survive the final two deliveries from Stuart Broad to earn Yorkshire the draw.

Earlier, Chris Read had completed a century off 178 balls for Notts to set a demanding target. Alex Lees scored a hundred for Yorkshire and held the innings together, well supported by Gary Ballance, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. Then came the late collapse.

A desire to hunt down the 320 total that had been set by the hosts got the better of the Yorkshire Tykes and a soon a couple of cheap wickets saw them eight wickets down, fewer than four overs left and still 60-odd runs to get.
Overall, 454 runs were scored for the loss of 14 wickets on a day that turned out to be a great advert for Championship cricket.

Both teams took 10 points away from the match.

Stumps day four: Somerset 313 & 229-2dec (Trescothick 129*) draw with Lancashire 493-9dec (Livingstone 108*), at Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton

Marcus Trescothick’s second century of the season, and his 60th in First Class cricket, guided Somerset to a draw on the final day of their clash with Lancashire at Taunton.

The hosts returned on day four trailing Lancashire by 180 runs having been asked to follow-on, needing to eliminate the deficit to avoid an innings defeat.

Night-watchman Tim Groenewald was dismissed quickly by Kyle Jarvis, before youngster Tom Abell popped a catch back to Simon Kerrigan to leave Somerset jittering at 61-2.

But the experienced pairing of Trescothick and skipper Chris Rogers, who boast a combined age of 78, withstood the Lancashire charge led by James Anderson to put on a stand of 168 and secure the draw.

They finally declared on 229-2. Trescothick finished on 129* with Rogers alongside him on 75* as Somerset made it three draws from three at the start of this year’s Championship and take nine points from the game.

Lancashire followed up their victory over Nottinghamshire by taking 11 points to move to within three points of leaders Warwickshire with a game in hand. Ashley Giles’ side can be rightly pleased with their performance in a game they dominated but didn’t quite have enough to take 20 wickets on a flat Taunton track

Somerset take 9 points away while Lancashire take 11.
