Derbyshire finished day two at Chelmsford still 264 runs shy of making Essex bat again. The next two days could prove tough for the visitors.

Essex, who are sitting comfortable on the top of the table, posted their highest total of the season across days one and two.

Reaching 538-7 before declaring early in the afternoon today, the hosts’ innings saw a few excellent performances but none more so than Nick Browne’s 255, which topped his previous best by more than 100 runs. Not to be left out, Shiv Thakor made career best figues of 4-107.

Derbyshire reached 124 by the close of play, for the loss of both Billy Godleman and Chesney Hughes. Wayne Madsen was lucky to be deemed not out toward close, as Ravi Bopara thought he had him caught behind.
