Rain halts Surrey progress after Willey takes three

Day two was a similar sinking feeling at The Oval after just 16.4 overs were available due to rain, but Aaron Finch was able to pass 50 against his former employers in what play was available.

The hosts resumed on 95-2 and made a positive start as Finch went to fifty from just 53 balls with a leg side clip off the bowling of Steven Patterson.

At the other end Zafar Ansari was going quietly about his business until David Willey picked up his second wicket of the innings in spectacular fashion by removing two of Ansari’s stumps to send the left-hander back to the pavilion for 40.

That brought to an end an 85-run partnership and Yorkshire were made to wait just two balls for another wicket as Finch drove Patterson to Jack Leaning at short cover to notch his second of the innings, Finch gone for 52.

That brought Jason Roy to the crease looking to consolidate after two wickets in three balls, but Yorkshire’s champion qualities showed once again as Willey found the outside edge of the England opener which was juggled by Andy Hodd behind the stumps.

However, Hodd held on which left Surrey 3-0 from nine balls.

With Surrey reeling at 121-5, Steven Davies and Ben Foakes were brought to the crease and went on the counter attack as Davies smacked 29 from 31 balls whilst Foakes hit 14 from 23.

With the game finely poised at 164-5 with Davies and Foakes putting on 43 for the sixth wicket, it was de ja vu as the rain arrived just after noon and the players did not return to the field for the rest of the day.
