SSCC Division One Round-up: Sunday 22nd May

Warwickshire v Durham at Edgbaston

Stumps, Day One: Warwickshire 273-8 (Umeed 101; Weighell 4-75)

Championship debutant Andy Umeed made a century for the hosts as Durham toiled through the day to leave Warwickshire 273-8 at stumps.

Some rain in the middle of the day limited the overs bowled on Day One to 77 but looking around the country; it could have been worse! The toss went uncontested this morning and Paul Collingwood’s men started with the ball.

James Weighell made quite a splash against the early season title contenders as he took four wickets for 75 runs over the course of the day.

The attack was, as ever, led by Graham Onions who added a bit of spice to the day’s play when he came up against Bear Varun Chopra early on in the day but was able to walk away with the wicket of debutant Umeed for 101 late on.

Brydon Carse backed up Weighell up will securing 3-59 including the prized wicket of captain and ex-England man Ian Bell.

Warwickshire’s batsmen had a good day with Chopra chalking up 71, Bell returning from injury and scoring 38 and Umeed scoring 101 on his Championship debut.

These were however the only significant contributions and close of play saw the hosts eight wickets down and still over 100 runs away from the maximum batting points having been 195-1 earlier on in proceedings.

Middlesex v Somerset at Lord’s

Stumps, Day One: Somerset 219-2 (Rogers 104*) v Middlesex

Chris Rogers returned to haunt Middlesex as Somerset built a position of strength on a day of attrition at Lord’s

The Somerset skipper came back to the ground on which he had averaged over 50 in four seasons with the hosts and almost inevitably produced a typically dogged century on another slow pitch at the home of cricket.

His former teammates knew what to expect when Rogers declined the opportunity to insert them under the new toss rules, instead having no hesitation in getting reacquainted with the crease having called correctly – the problem was they couldn’t stop him.

The Middlesex attack, nobly led by Toby Roland-Jones (2-33), bowled with discipline, to restrict Rogers to just nine boundaries in an unbeaten 104 which spanned the best part of five hours before bad light brought an early close with Somerset 219-2 from 80 overs.

But while he scored slowly the former Aussie opener suffered just two real scares, the first on 58 when he edged the luckless Tim Murtagh through the cordon, the second a close lbw shout from the bowling of James Franklin shortly afterwards.

Middlesex had earlier got reward with the new ball when Roland-Jones pinned former England opener Marcus Trescothick lbw for just eight and the former England Lion would later induce Tom Abell (41) to nick one through to wicketkeeper John Simpson.

That was 94-2, but James Hildreth survived a few sticky moments early on to make an unbeaten 60 of his own in a stand with Rogers of 125 which the two protagonists have power to add to tomorrow morning weather permitting.

The forecast is not the best however, so they may have to put the hammer down to accelerate proceedings and then hope their own attack can extract something Middlesex missed from another wicket seemingly offering little or nothing to the team with ball in hand.

Hampshire v Nottinghamshire at the Ageas Bowl

Stumps, Day One: Hampshire 149-4 (Ervine 38*) v Nottinghamshire

A rain-affected day in Southampton permitted just 57 overs to be bowled on Day One of Hampshire’s Division One match against Nottinghamshire.

Odds were somewhat even when play was called off for the day just before 19:00 as the scoreboard read 149-4.

The Hampshire openers shared an opening stand of 45 before Michael Carberry, on just 19, became Jake Ball’s first scalp of the day in collaboration with Dan Christian who took the catch. Jimmy Adams then fell with the scorecard on 60 to a stylish caught and bowled opportunity for Luke Fletcher.

The visiting bowlers then had their tails firmly up and secured another wicket each, both lbws, Liam Dawson falling first to Fletcher and then Will Smith to Ball.

Sean Ervine and Tom Alsop steady the ship somewhat from 84-4 and managed to close the day without falling and carry totals of 38* and 32* respectively into tomorrow.
