SSCC Round up Division Two: Wednesday May 4th

After a week of bad weather all round, there were three draws in Division Two and just the one impressive victory. Unlucky Leicestershire had to go without a win, Billy Godleman raised a few eyebrows in Derbyshire's draw at Northants but Daniel Bell-Drummond and Tom Latham would settle for nothing less than victory.

Worcestershire v Essex at New Road, Worcester

Essex 451-9 dec (Cook 142, Westley 125, Leach 5-115) and 95-2 (Cook 48*) drew with Worcestershire 411-8 dec (D’Oliveira 128, Kohler-Cadmore 119*, Napier 4-127)

After a couple of days of bad weather and more than 100 overs lost to, a draw was always the most likely outcome of the meeting between Essex and Worcestershire this week. Nevertheless, without the efforts of Tom Kohler Cadmore, Worcestershire may have struggled to avoid defeat.

Kohler-Cadmore’s unbeaten 117 today was his second century for the season and the fourth for this match, and it helped ensure Worcestershire took maximum batting points from the fixture.

The home side came out this morning with 226-5, still 76 runs shy of avoiding the follow-on. Kohler-Cadmore stoff firm, however, displaying some impressive drives and building three half-century partnerships as he made his way to a century off 151 balls.

Content with his team’s efforts, Daryl Mitchell declared early in the afternoon session with the side on 411-8. Essex then reached 95-2, with Alastair Cook reaching 48*, before bringing the day to an early close and the match to a draw.

Sussex v Leicestershire at Hove

Sussex 163 (Joyce 56, Raine 4-30) and 337-6 (Nash 144, Joyce 69) drew with Leicestershire 473-8 dec (Pettini 142*, Horton 100, Cosgrove 80)

Chris Nash batted for more than seven hours today, making his second century of the season in the process, as Sussex battled to deny Leicestershire victory at Hove.

In the marathon session, Nash faced 315 balls and hit 21 fours before being caught behind down the leg side for 144. The wicket came with Sussex only 32 runs ahead and already five men down, giving the visitors hope of a win after all.

A sixth wicket fell just three overs later, that of Ben Brown for 16, but Ollie Robinson and Ajmal Shahzad survived a Clint McKay onslaught in the final hour and no more wickets fell. Sussex had reached 377-6 when the sides shook hands.

Kent v Glamorgan at Canterbury

Kent 488 (Bell-Drummond 84, Stevens 58, Denly 58) and 190-0 (Bell-Drummond 86*, Latham 79*) beat Glamorgan 260 (Meschede 63, Claydon 4-59) and 414 (Lloyd 107, Wagg 106) by 10 wickets

Daniel Bell-Drummond and Tom Latham broke Kent records as they took the side to a ten-wicket victory over Glamorgan this afternoon.

Chasing 187 for the win, the hosts reached the target early in the second session without losing a single wicket. Bell-Drummond closed the day on 86* and Latham just behind him on 79*. It was the second impressive display for the pair, who had put on a first wicket partnership of 131 in the first innings.

Latham and Bell-Drummond are the first Kent opening pair to make century stands for the first wicket in each innings of a game since 1954, and only the third Kent opening pair ever to do so.

Northamptonshire v Derbyshire at Wantage Road

Northants 470 (Levi 104, Libby 102, Thakor 3-65) drew with Derbyshire 324 (Thakor 83, Azharullah 4-95) and 229-1 (Hughes 109*, Godleman 94)
