Michael Carberry leaves Hampshire to join Leicestershire

Michael Carberry has signed a two-year deal at Leicestershire after joining the club on loan in August, leaving Hampshire after 11 years on the South Coast.

The 35-year-old has played three games for Leicestershire since signing his one-month loan deal just weeks ago, and will now be at Grace Road until the end of 2019.

Having joined Hampshire from Kent in 2006, Carberry has been a crucial cog in their white-ball machine, prominent in their success, scoring 3,066 runs; it is no surprise that his loan deal included the stipulation that he return to play for them on Finals Day, ultimately losing the semi-final.

“We have been looking to add an experienced opener to our squad and Michael fits the bill for us,” said Leicestershire’s Chief Executive Wasim Khan, MBE.

“Michael’s first-class record speaks for itself, and this coupled with his international experience and hunger to perform, will add significant value to the development of our younger players both on and off the field. It is great to have Michael with us for the next two seasons.”

Hampshire’s Director of Cricket, Giles White, said: “Michael has been an outstanding professional for Hampshire over a number of years. He has been an integral part of many successful campaigns and has always been a very popular figure at the Club.

“We all wish him well with the exciting challenge at Leicestershire and look forward to seeing him back at the Ageas Bowl in the future.”

Carberry’s stint at The Ageas Bowl was, at times, far from easy. In November 2010, after making his England debut in Bangladesh, he was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs which denied him the chance to tour Australia with the England Performance Programme.

During the 2011 season, he was permitted to return to cricket but, last July, he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour. It was only in January this year that he returned to training having been given the all-clear.
