Yorkshire v Hampshire
Root and Ballance dominated the day for Yorkshire as they put on a 182 partnership, with Ballance passing the 100 mark and finishing on 120*. The pair batted together, with Root falling just short on a century on 94. Yorkshire finished on 310/3, with Patterson joining Ballance at the crease.
It was Edwards (2) and Dawson (1) who picked up the wickets for Hampshire.
Surrey v Essex
Peter Siddle was the stand out bowler for Essex, picking up four wickets at the Oval as the reigning champions, Surrey, finished the day on 342/7.
Will Jacks, the 20 year old talent that has shot onto the cricket scene after scoring a rapid century in his pre season ventures, made 88 and Ben Foakes made 69.
But it was Ryan Patel who showed a profound amount of resilience throughout the day, as he came in at three in the 18th over and batted for the remainder of the day. He finished 70 not out off 223 balls.
Nottinghamshire V Somerset
Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 232 by Somserset on the first day at Trent Bridge, with Lewis Gregory taking 6 wickets for 68 runs.
Somerset then responded to reach 74/3 at the end of the day, trailing by 189 runs. Abell is at the crease with Bartlett to keep Somerset ticking over, but it’s a game that seems well in the balance.
Warwickshire V Kent
Kent put themselves in the driving seat at Edgbaston as the youthful talent of Zak Crawley showed his talent opening the batting as he scored 108 to put the visitors in a good position on day one, as they finished on 367-5.
Miles, who made the move from Gloucestershire to Warwickshire made his debut for the club and in the afternoon session bowled well and picked up two wickets, including the valuable scalp of Heino Kuhn on 72. Brookes also bowled well, showing his rapid and sharp attack, and was unlucky to only pick up the one wicket.
