SSCC Preview: Derbyshire v Glamorgan

Derbyshire sees the return of First Class Cricket on Sunday as Glamorgan make the journey to the East Midlands. Both sides are yet to taste defeat – Derbyshire with an opening match win over Durham and a draw against Gloucestershire, and Glamorgan with draws against Gloucestershire and Northants.

Those results see the sides lying fourth and ninth respectively in the table separated by eight points, which shows a win could change the complexion of the table quite quickly.

Glamorgan arrive after drawing a match they could have won against Gloucestershire, and will be full of confidence and will be looking to push for their first victory. Derbyshire have had a week off following the conclusion of the Royal London Cup, and will be rested and refreshed ahead of Sunday. They will be looking to carry on where they left off with the red ball before the 50 over comp, secure another win and push for a top three place and a promotion to division one.

Derbyshire will welcome back Graham Wagg, who spent five seasons at the club before moving to Glamorgan. Wagg scored over 1700 runs for Derbyshire and took 193 wickets at an average just over 32. He always performs well when he returns to Derbyshire, but the home county will be hoping he only performs well at his benefit event arranged for during the visit on Monday evening.

If Wagg does perform on the pitch, then Glamorgan will be hoping it’s to get the victory that will push them up the table.

Key Men

In an age when everyone wants a wicketkeeper to be big hitting six merchant, Derbyshire just do not have that. Instead, they have Harvey Hosein. Hosein does not fit that mould. He is silkier, keeping the ball on the floor, solid and compact with bat in hand – a bat that has scored 181 runs so far in First Class Cricket this season, at average of 60.33, coming in at 6 and guiding the lower order, ensuring that competitive totals have been scored.

Hosein has also been given the gloves for his side in all formats this season and the responsibility has seen his keeping improve, too. He is excellent behind the stumps, and the Derbyshire bowlers will be confident he will take any chances they create.

When you make a move in the winter you want to show why your new county has faith in you, where your previous county maybe didn’t. When Nottinghamshire signed three top young batsmen, Billy Root decided his future lay elsewhere and he has not disappointed his new team. So far in the Championship he has batted three times and scored 161 runs, at an average of 53.67 with one century. He has added some steel and grit to the Glamorgan middle order and if he can maintain this form then, Glamorgan may fancy their chances of an upset.

Team News

Derbyshire are yet to announce their squad, but with one of the smallest playing staffs in county cricket, do not expect much variance from their previous County Championship match. The one change they would like to have made would be for Leus Du Ploy to play, however he is still struggling with a thumb injury picked up in the Royal London One Day Cup.

Tony Palladino will be back to lead the attack after sitting out the white ball matches, and having had a run out for the seconds earlier in the week. Tom Lace will return after being recalled by Middlesex for one game where he scored a half-century, and will be hoping his form continues in the middle order.

Derbyshire squad: Billy Godleman, Luis Reece, Wayne Madsen, Tom Lace, Alex Hughes, Harvey Hosein, Matt Critchley, Anuj Dal, Logan van Beek, Tony Palladino, Ravi Rampaul, James Taylor

Glamorgan will probably name the same squad as the one that drew against Gloucestershire on Friday. They may bring a slightly larger squad, as it is an away game, but don’t expect too much change. The visitors will be looking for wickets from the evergreen Wagg, who always does well against his former county and they’ll be hoping for runs from their wonderfully named overseas South African Marnus Labuschagne and the resurgent Billy Root.

Glamorgan squad: Chris Cooke, David Lloyd, Billy Root, Charlie Hemphrey, Dan Douthwaite, Graham Wagg, Jeremy Lawlor, Kieran Bull, Lukas Carey, Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Hogan, Nick Selman, Tom Cullen

Weather and conditions

The forecast looks set fair for the four days of scheduled play. A mixture of sunshine and cloud is predicted with only a slight chance of rain. I’d take your coat along, though, as temperatures are unlikely to get above 20 degrees. The ground had a second team fixture played on it this week, which ended up in a draw with plenty of runs scored despite there being something there for the bowlers. So you would hope for a similar track come Sunday.
