Day 2: Durham start the day on 406-6
Yorkshire would have been happy when day 1 came to end, but no doubt were determined to fight on day 2.
That fight started early, as Ryan Sidebottom had Paul Collingwood trapped LBW for 81, adding just 7 to his overnight score. Michael Richardson and Mark Wood settled in, with the former tucking into Adil Rashid. The young wicketkeeper batsman comfortably passed his half-century, but not before Wood drove Liam Plunkett straight to cover for 20.
New man Jamie Harrison also looked competent and played a great supporting role for Richardson, until he was run out by Jonny Bairstow for 35.
Richardson was still short of his hundred by around 20 runs. He chose Kane Williamson’s off spin to hit reach his three figures, brought up with a six over mid-wicket. He was caught on the boundary soon after.
Durham finished on 573 all out, putting them in control of the match.
Yorkshire had a mountain to climb and, with the score on 18, lost Adam Lyth trying to drive to Chris Rushworth. Williamson and Phil Jaques saw off the new ball and began to build.
Scott Borthwick took Jaques by surprise when he got a leg-spinner to bounce sharply, causing him to pop it to Smith at short leg for 36, leaving Yorkshire on 72-2.
The host’s captain Andrew Gale would have hoped to contribute a big score to bring his team back into the game, but he could only add 12 before the left arm pace of Harrison trapped him in front. Yorkshire were now 3 down for little over 100, still trailing by 467 runs.
Williamson was desperate for a partner to stay with him and new man Bairstow duly obliged. The pair added 75 runs to see the home side to the end the day without further damage on 182-3, 391 behind.
Williamson and Bairstow were key to Yorkshire who could only realistically hope to draw the game from this position.
