Stephen Eskinazi will take the reins at Middlesex for the upcoming Bob Willis Cup, with Toby Roland-Jones taking on the job of his second in command.

Eskinazi, who made his first-class debut for the club in 2015, has experience skippering the side and now has the opportunity to do it again given the Dawid Malan and Peter Handscomb-shaped hole that has been left in the squad this season.

Malan had led the side in all formats since 2018, before stepping down at the end of the 2019 season and leaving the county to join Yorkshire on a four-year deal. His replacement was due to come in the form of Australian middle-order batsman Handscomb, but his two-year deal with the club has been deferred in light of the restrictions that have been put on life by the current coronavirus pandemic.

In spite of all this, head coach Stuart Law seems optimistic, viewing Eskinazi and Roland-Jones as the perfect men to lead the side forward.

Law said: “Steve was the obvious choice for me as the captain of our squad in Pete Handscomb’s absence.

“Last year when Steve stood in for us, the team played really well and with a smile on their face and had immediate success. Good signs for sure and I look forward to working with him again this season.

“Toby is a leader and a much loved and respected member in the dressing room. I look forward to him leading this group in partnership with Steve, and help mould this squad into the team they can be.”

Both men were a part of Middlesex’s last County Championship success and the club will hope they can be integral to the club’s first (and most likely only) Bob Willis trophy.
