Season One: Episode Eight – Derbyshire vs Sussex (Day 4)

The Recap:

The challenge is to get Sussex promoted after five seasons languishing in the second tier. There was money to play with but my acquisitions have plunged us into the red. Against Nottinghamshire we have scraped a rain affected draw. Now, we head to the north.

Day Four:

A straight shoot out: Derbyshire are 54-1. We need 9 wickets – they need 166 to win.

Do I like those odds? Not really.

Honestly, we bowl like drains. Meaker gets Godleman lbw for 68 as Derbyshire streak away to 111-2. Stupid Nelson.

Brown then takes another worldy behind the stumps off the big man, as Madsen goes for 31. 114-3. They still need 106 but I’d say the odds were on their side.

Wiese is still running in gamely and he gets du Plooy by tucking him up with pace. Salt takes a bootstrap catch and he’s gone for 10. 129-4

At lunch, they are 177-4 and need only 43.

I think we might be buggered.

Hosein and Hughes kill us. Meaker does get Hughes clean bowled for 55, which takes them to 213-5, but it’s wayyyyyy too little too late. Derbyshire need 7 to win.

They do it in one over.

We lose, purely because of that second innings collapse. They end 223-5 and win by five wickets.

We are still fourth in the table, six games down and one away from the midpoint. And then, just like that, our momentum halts, it’s the T20 cup and our promotion push, which was really kicking up a gear, has died.

Which, if you think about it, is a very accurate representation of how the real game of cricket works.
