Season One: Episode 43 – Sussex vs Nottinghamshire, County Championship (Day 1)

And so we arrive at the penultimate match of the season. We’ve blown all our chances of promotion and lay firmly mid-table. We’ll finish this season with a trip away to high flying Middlesex.

Selection:

Will Sheffield is a promising young bowler but, in the County Championship, his 81 overs has netted 5 wickets at a cost of 53.80. He out. George Garton (122 overs, 14 wickets at 33.07) takes the berth.

Staggeringly we win a toss. I’ll take a bat please

Day One:

Sussex’s Innings

Tom Haines and Laurie Evans head out to take on one S. Broad Esquire.

Yeah, well, that goes well. Haines out, caught Christopher Nash for 2 off the lanky cherub faced England bowling git. 2-1.

Things improve immeasurably as skipper Stiaan van Zyl heads out. His five balls are truncated by Broad doing him for pace and smashing his stumps to fire wood. Prick. 4-2.

I hate this game.

Unbelievably, we do shore things up. Travis Head partners with Evans and we reach the daily bread, 75-2.

Both batsmen are set and Notts aren’t doing much. I chuckle as Broad beams some leg byes to the boundary. Lanky twat.

I smile a lot less, as Head chips one to Steven Mullaney at second slip off Mohammad Abbas. 86-3.

We move across the century line and Evans gets his 50 off 147.

I have said some unkind things about young Ravi Bopara this season. However, he is blameless as he scores 13 off a very disciplined 67 balls.

Why Laurie Evans decides to shit the bed and run the dodgiest single since Harvey Weinstein got divorced I shall never know.

What I do know is that we are now 131-4.

I can only imagine the look on Bopara’s face as Evans chips a flaccid caught and bowled back at Luke “definition of journeyman pie chucker” Fletcher. He walks off for 68 from 187.

We are in the proverbial at 136-5.

Delray Rawlins soon follows suit. Caught Ben Compton off Mullaney. 144-6 and tea 10 minutes away.

We make it to tea. David Wiese partners with Ben Brown before the South African spoons one off Abbas, which is snaffled by Ben Duckett. 162-7.

George Garton was brought in with one eye on his batting. He begins splattering Abbas around. But not for long. Caught on the crease 16 off 14, lbw. 180-8.

This Ben Brown decides he’s going to test Mitchell Claydon’s sprint powers. They’re not up to the job. Duck. 190-9.

Will Beer comes to the wicket but it is Brown who gives Broad his third wicket of the day, caught by Mullaney. All out for 195.

Nottinghamshire Innings

We tee up the bowling plans and set Claydon and Garton flowing. Not a huge amount happens. 22-0.

Wiese and Bopara are the first change and they also keep it tight. Day one sputters to an end, Nottinghamshire 30 for no loss.

We lead by 165.
