The campaign Women’s County Cricket Day was launched in 2019 to encourage fans to attend a women’s cricket game on a particular day of the year, its aim being to raise awareness of and to celebrate the women’s game. This year’s event will take place on the early May Bank Holiday the 3May.
Ebony Rainford-Brent, the Director of Women’s Cricket at Surrey, said, “I’d encourage cricket followers to take this great opportunity to get out there and support their county.”
With the 2020 season curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Women’s County T20 Cup’s return is welcome in a new format. This year sees the introduction of regional groups.
As the curtain-raiser to a packed summer of women’s domestic cricket, there is set to be many familiar faces in action with England stars such as Tammy Beaumont and Katherine Brunt likely to feature.
Many regional professional players such as Georgia Adams, Alex Hartley and Sophie Luff are set to play in preparation for the regional competitions.
As Kirstie Gordon states, “I guess, for other players that maybe are pushing for a regional contract, a young 16-year-old who isn’t quite at a regional level, it is a great opportunity for them to play competitive fixtures and play with some really talented regional cricketers.”
As Rainford-Brent points out, “It’s so important to raise awareness of women’s county cricket – it’s where we’ll find the England and regional stars of the future.”
On the day, each county will play two games each against the same opponent. There are some interesting fixtures on display. In the West Midlands Group, Somerset play Wales. There are also exciting games in the South East Group with Kent v Middlesex at Beckenham and Sussex v Hampshire.
