The group stages are over and now the hard work begins as the Hampshire and Warwickshire backroom staff phone around to find hotel rooms for their quarter final matches, hoping to have to repeat the exercise on Friday night. Hampshire will be travelling to Leicester, while the Bears are not quite sure yet where they will be playing as New Road is being used for the England Lions game. However they will not have to travel far. Somerset and Glamorgan can relax as they have booked themselves a home semi final on Sunday.
It was highly unlikely anyone was going to pass Somerset at the top of Group A given their superior net run rate and Worcestershire were able to hold on to second spot despite going down to Lancashire by three runs. Lancashire were restricted to 237 from their 50 overs, Josh Bohannon with 87 and George Balderson 50, Tom Hinley taking three for 58 with his left arm wrist spin. In reply, 83 from Jake Libby kept Worcestershire in the hunt, but wickets kept falling, 19-year-old Charlie Barnard taking three for 47. Tom Taylor made 41 and Tom Hinley battled at the end with 24 off 18 balls, but Worcestershire fell just short. However their net run rate hardly suffered and they kept ahead of the two other teams that finished on 10 points, Hampshire and Derbyshire.
Of those it was Hampshire who secured third spot with a 19 run win against Middlesex. 75 not out from Toby Albert and forties from Tom Prest, Ben Brown and Liam Dawson helped the Hawks to 276/7 from their 50 overs. Four wickets from Kyle Abbott then kept the Middlesex batters in check, ands they were dismnissed in 48.1 overs. An attack including Mohammad Abbas, Kyle Abott, Brad Wheal and Liam Dawson must put Hampshire in with a shout in the knock out stages, Dawson released back from the London Spirit for this game.
Durham would have gone through ahead of Hampshire if they had won their last game, but went down to Derbyshire by four wickets. Durham had Callum Parkinson back from the Hundred and were put into bat at Chester-le-Street. Their total of 253 was built around 104 from Scott Borthwick. 17-year-old Harry Moore put in another good performance with the ball for the Falcons, ending with three for 45 to take his tally to 10 for the competition. Derbyshire got home with seven balls to spare, with runs all down the order, headed by David Lloyd’s 63. Derbyshire also finished on 10 points, coming fourth on net run rate. Durham ended a further point behind.
In Group B the top spot was still up for grabs, with Glamorgan, Warwickshire and Leicestershire all capable of taking it. In the end a win for Glamorgan against Yorkshire secured the home semi final. In a game that ebbed and flowed, an innings of 66 from Billy Root and four wickets from Andy Gorvin were the difference between the two sides. Yorkshire fielded a very young side, but their bowlers had Glamorgan in trouble at 103/5. Root has played some important innings in this competition and he managed another one, as along with Timm van der Gugten, who made 34 not out from 35 balls, coming in at 10, they got the home side to 230/9 from their 47 overs. It looked a good toss for Yorkshire to win in seamer friendly conditions, but van der Gugten and Jamie McIlroy also took full advantage and reduced Yorkshire to 57/4. The change bowling gave the batters more opportunities and Jonny Tattersall (51) launched a fight back, first with Yash Vagadia (21) and then Matthew Revis (28), but Andy Gorvin removed Revis then Tattersall in the same over and the stuffing was knocked out of the Yorkshire response. They were dismissed for 168 and the margin of victory looked enough to maintain Glmaorgan’s run rate advantage.
At Rugby, Warwickshire faced Nottinghamshire in another game shortend by rain. Put into bat, the Bears batters kept making starts without going on, Ed Barnard top scorting with 31, as they were dismissed for 182 from 46.3 of their 48 overs. Robert Lord and Liam Patterson-White both took three wickets. The Outlaws’ batter also found life difficult, but Jack Haynes was able to keep going and his 57 not out helped them to 135/5 from 28 overs before further rain took the players off. No further play was possible and Notts finished 12 runs ahead on Duckworth–Lewis–Stern.
Who would get the home quarter final was then resting on the result at Bristol between Gloucestershire and Leicestershire. A win for Leicestershire would move them into second spot, whilst victory for Gloucestershire would leave Warwickshire in second and move Gloucestershre into third. Rain delayed the start and when Gloucestershire started their innings the game had been reduced to 36 overs-a-side. Tight bowling never allowed the home batters to get going and Cameron Bancroft top scored with 36 in an innings of 192/9. Tom Scriven finished with three for 37. The Foxes were left chasing a revised target of 196 and were soon in trouble as they lost their first two wickets without a run on the board and were 19/3 after 5.2 overs. However the Foxes have a strong batting line up and a 120 run partnership between Ajinkya Rahane (62) and Peter Handscomb (65*) broke the back of the chase and they got home with 14 balls to spare.
The result moved Leicestershire above Warwickshire into second place. Nottinghamshire, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire all finished on eight points.
The quarter final games on 16th August are therefore:
Leicestershire v Hampshire
Worcestershire v Warwickshire
Semi finals on 18th August:
Glamorgan v Worcestershire or Warwickshire
Somerset v Leicestershre or Hampshire
