Derbyshire sign South African Hashim Amla

Derbyshire have signed their third high profile player of the summer as today they announced the signing of South African captain, Hashim Amla. Amla will join the club in May, when Martin Guptill leaves to fulfill his Test duties.

31-year-old Amla is currently ranked the world’s number three Test batter, having played in 82 tests and with an average of 52.78. As a T20 batter, he has 2,500 runs in 100 appearances, with his high score being 88*.

Amla’s wealth of experience fits in well with the Club’s vision, combining young homegrown prospects with high quality talent. That the county is able to attract players of such quality can be seen as a sign of Derbyshire’s progress and determination.

Elite Performance Director, Graeme Welch, reiterated this: “Hashim is a world class batsman and a proven match winner on both the Test and limited overs stage.

“He’s a player I have worked with before and I know he will be a great influence on the younger lads. He will also bring a wealth of experience to the side as we look to compete at the highest level in both red ball and white ball cricket.”

Chairman Chris Grant added: “We’re working tirelessly to bring success to the county and our ability to augment our young Derbyshire squad with world-class players like Martin Guptill, Tillakaratne Dilshan and now Hashim Amla is another signal of the huge progress we are making as a Club on and off the field.”

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph Wayne Madsen, who has played with his countryman previously, expressed his excitement at the prospect of Amlas’s arrival: “He’s got a tremendous amount of experience and he’s a great guy as well. He will fit in really well with the rest of the squad.”

“Hash and I get on very well. We had a good catch-up when he was at Surrey but I haven’t seen much of him since then and it will be great to have him here. He is a top man.”

Amla will be available for Derbyshire for two LVCC matches and three Natwest T20 blast fixtures.
